Dulverton
like so many of the Towns, and Villages of the 'West Country'
is a old Saxon Town. Which is documented in the Domesday book
of 1086. Situated between the River's Barle and Exe. The rivers
converge about one mile down the beautiful valley of the River Barle.
Dulverton is regarded as the Southern gateway on to Exmoor. It is all
so the only town on Exmoor Proper.Dulverton is a busy little town of
less than 1500 inhabitants. It is however very popular with the hunting
set and also anglers, as the Barle still has trout, and salmon, amongst
the many fish, that live in this pristine River. The abolition of fox
hunting has dealt a blow not only to the huntsmen. But also to the many
farmers, who fear a large increase in the danger to new born lambs.
This new legislation will bring. On a personal note I can see both
sides of the argument, and would not wish to be drawn into the
controversy . Dulverton is the headquarters of the
National Trust, and
their information center is a must place to visit. For more

There are many beautiful walks and the ubiquitous Tarr Steps
is about five miles from Dulverton. The steps are believed to be of
Celtic origin. There are also many outdoor pursuit centers including
horse riding, and canoing, sailing. For Wimborn lake is close to the
town. But Dulverton is above all the place for artists,
photographers, nature lovers, and walkers.Yes the beautiful countryside
that Dulverton lies in is indisputable its biggest attraction.
The year 2001 was a very traumatic year for the exmoor farmers. And
indeed the farming community nation-wide for the terrible foot and
mouth disease struck. It decimated livestock and over 6 million cattle
were slaughtered. And the sight of fields absent of animals was very
evident. A sad and distressing sight. Not only for us local people, but
also for the millions of visitors who were use to seeing the cattle and
sheep happily grazing. Thankfully the farming community has recovered
and once more cattle and sheep can be seen. And I pray we will never
see this terrible disease again.
Dulverton has a lot offer for it is close to Dunster and its castle,
Withypool, Porlock, and Minehead are all within easy traveling
distance. Also close by is Winsford Hill where the famous Anchor herd
of wild Exmoor ponies run. And Dulverton itself what has Dulveron to
