Exmoor

Exford surprisingly as the name suggests Exford sits on the River Ex. There is a ford that crosses the Ex. hence the name Exford ( laughing ) Exford boasts a beautiful village green, surrounded by shops, restaurants, and hotels. And yes Exford is another small but picturesque Exmoor village of about 400 inhabitants. It's main economy being tourism. It is a busy hunting, walking, a shooting center. But with the advent of the Fox Hunting Law one of these activities was virtually erased from the itinerary. Never the less Exford still has a lot to offer the visitor, who is seeking a relaxing restful holiday. There is a camping and tourer site at Westermill Farm, with all the amenities the camper needs. The campsite is on the banks of the shallow clear waters of the beautiful river Ex. So it is perfectly safe place for children to play without parents having to worry about safety. And they even provide: free hot showers. Another place well worth a visit is the Exmoor Falconry and Animal farm, which is situated about 6 miles, from Exford. Ideally placed on Exmoor, Exford is withing easy traveling distance to the coastal resorts of Minehead, and Lynmouth, plus Porlock, and Dunster with its famous castle, near to Exford are also the remains of an even earlier fortification; Road Castle: which is an Iron Age, enclosure. On the harbour at Lynmouth is a museum which doubles as a memorial to all the people who lost their lives due to the terrible flood of 1952.

Exmoor it is the ideal place for a holiday. And not only during the summer months. You see more and more people, are taking autumn, and spring, breaks, these days. And indeed autumn and spring are both wonderful time's of the year to visit us here in the west country. In autumn one will see the fauna, and flora, prepare for the harshness of winter. The beautiful hues, and colours, of the countryside around Exford are truly amazing. You can see the hardy Exmoor ponies, growing their long warm winter coats, and the squirrels, busy replenishing their larder in readiness, for what the winter brings. Then Spring arrives, the trees, and hedgerows, will be shake of their winter look, and start to blossom. And the wildlife will be awakening. Yes that wonderful time of the year will have arrived, spring. !!! This like Autumn is a wonderful time of the year here in the 'West Country.' So why not spend a short break here. It is the tonic we all need, a quiet invigorating, Autumn break, or to walk in the Spring-time sun, after the long cold winter days. A awful lot of people choose to come and be invigorated at these times of the year why not be one of them

There are many delightful Inn's and restaurant on Exmoor. One of my favorites is the Exford Bridge it is a stunning licensed restaurant and bed and breakfast; with a perfect setting in the center of the picturesque village of Exford. Unfortunately one of my most, favorite Exmoor public houses has now been converted to a tea rooms ( sacrilege) yes I am sorry to say the Exford Bridge Inn is no longer. Never mind there is still the White Horse Inn! Exford is the ideal place to use as a base for walking, fishing, horse riding, or just relaxing and taking in the wonderful unspoilt beauty of Exmoor. And if you wish to leave this idyllic place for a days sightseeing Dunster with its historic castle, or busy Minehead, are quite near.

There are plenty of well sign-posted walks  on Exmoor these are numerous and varied. The four main and best known walks on Exmoor are, The South West Coast Path, Two Moors Way, The MacMillan Way and the Tarka Trial. Ornithologists, will find a profusion of birds, they include the many birds of prey that can be spotted over the moors as well as, kingfishers, and dippers, along the river banks. Others that can be spotted are gold finches, stonechats, and dartford warblers, to name a few. And lovers of nature and wildlife will not be disappointed either for Exford sits in pristine unspoilt countryside. Yes in the very heart of beautiful Exmoor. Where wild ponies, and red deer freely roam. And if one is really lucky, otters can be seen at play on the river bank's and the shy retiring badger is also about along with stoats. Yes Exford is definitely my idea of a great place to relax and enjoy myself, yes without doubt little Exford is the sort of place I like to chose to holiday in.!
